MCP guide: connect AI to tools and data
Understand Model Context Protocol and prepare a small, controlled first experiment with an MCP server.
What MCP is
Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open standard that lets an AI application work with tools and data outside the conversation through a consistent interface.
Think of it as a standard connector. An MCP server exposes a defined set of capabilities, such as reading selected files, querying a database, or calling a business system. The AI client can discover those capabilities and use them when the user requests a relevant task.
MCP does not automatically give an AI access to everything on your computer. Access depends on the server you install, the paths or accounts you configure, and the permissions you approve.
